| Abstract | The absence of testimonies from homosexual survivors of the Holocaust is remarkable, but instead of lamenting this lack while waiting for unpublished manuscripts to reach the public, this essay argues that this predicament provides us with an opportunity to reconsider the role of testimoney in literature. At the same time, it allows us to observe the emergence of conditions conducive to the formation of a new kind of art as well. The essay argues that through a reading of Kierkegaard's Philosophische Brocken, a different conception of the witness emerges, one that does not depend on historical presence, but on information and imagination. If one accepts this premise, one can suggest that a gay Holocaust literature should soon emerge, not so much by surviving victims of the camps as by the following generation. The essay concludes with a paradigmatic examination of Martin Sherman's play Bent, which constitutes an important example of, and contribution to, this gay Holocaust literature. (Verlag). |
