| Abstract | The essay examines what may be the most vexing problem in Holocaust studies today - the means by which postmodernism's emphasis on particularity in historical inquiry can sometimes serve as license for relativization and apology. The essay argues that one way of eclipsing this dilemma resides in the recovery of the very totalizing impulse repudiated by postmodern historiography and aesthetics, and that the value of this impulse for an ethics of memory is dramatized in an exemplary way in Thomas Mann's early postwar novel, Doktor Faustus. By tracing the artistic forms taken up by the composer at the center of Mann's novel, the essay shows how Leverkühn's art bears witness to historical suffering by seeking to occupy without apology a totalizing position - not as a means for replicating totalitarian violence against particularity, but rather as the point at which we, as human subjects, fully engage the unsymbolizable trauma of history.
