| Abstract | The article is concerned with the fate of the intellectual in twentieth- century Germany. Within this larger context, however, the analysis places the emphasis upon the formal aspect, i. e., the question of writing and style. More specifically, the discussion focuses on the structure and the use of the essay form in the writings of two leading intellectuals, Georg Lukács and Theodor W. Adorno. As a point of departure, the analysis makes use of Max Weber's famous definition of the role and the ethos of the scientist. The discussion first takes up Lucács's theory and practice of the essay form and then follows the development of the concept of the essay as a specific mode of writing in the work of Adorno and Peter Bürger. The analysis underlines the essay's search for an anti-systematic (and therefore non-scientific) form of truth. The essay's anti-systematic rigor is the intellectual's answer to the enterprice of science and the ethos of the specialist. The article concludes with a discussion of the present dilemma of intellectuals as a social group in the context of the present attack against the role of the public intellectual. (Verlag). |
