| Abstract | The essay examines Kracauer's neglected writings on friendship, which situate him as a seminal theorist of friendship and relation. In these texts, friendship is characterized as a privileged sphere in which to consider the possibility of an ethical and political subject, despite the fact that we can never seek recourse there to an essential groundedness. The subject that emerges in Kracauer's texts is constantly confronted with an otherness, an alterity even within the self. Because Kracauer's concept of friendship is inexorably intertwined with its mode of presentation, this reading follows the tropes and "folds" of his texts; indeed, the figure of the fold names the vicissitudes of friendship and community. Kracauer's staging of friendship can thus be read as an intervention in our thinking of ethics, politics, and the community. The essay argues that the unfolding of a new democratic community can only occur in a break with the desire for immediate comprehension and legibility.
