Abstract | Alarmed by "A Nation at Risk" (1983) a climate was created to inaugurate "a comittee at the National Research Council, the Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB), to examine what might be done to coordinate efforts nationally to improve the state of mathematics education in schools". As result the paper "Renewing school Mathematics" was published in 1990. This paper identified six types of changes and the articles of this issue of AJE discuss each of them: applications in the secondary curriculum (Z.Usiskin); 2) changes in mathematics and how it used: integration of school mathematics and science (A.Isaacs et al.); 3) changes in the role of technology: technological revolution and reform at school mathematics (M.K.Heid); 4) changes in American society: designing a High School curriculum for all students (L.Alper et al.); 5) changes in understanding how students learn: theories and practices of thinking and learning to think (J.G.Greeno); 6) changes in international competitiveness: influences from other countries on reform curricula. The seventh article deals with the implementation of curriculum projects. (DIPF/Bi.) |
