Abstract | For methodological reasons the approaches of comparative education focus more on differences between the educational systems than on their similarities. Nevertheless starting from the similarities offers a valuable opportunity to discover their limits and to go beyond what they suggest at first. This is obvious for the French and the Japanese educational systems. Both seem to give the same importance to elitism and competition. But the conditions in which the students are selected and compete in the two systems are not the same. Therefore they must be taken for "false twins" although the reforms launched in France and attempted in Japan are often critizised as equally unsatisfactory. (DIPF/orig.abstract) |
