Abstract | The essay proposes an interpretation of the Japanese educational system focusing on socialization at school. It suggets that neither the problems of education in Japan nor its merits could be fully understood without recognizing the specific pedagogical arrangements shaping not only the style of learning and teaching and the school life in general, but also the ideals and promises of learning as a shared social experience. It sketches these arrangements throughout elementary, middle and high schools and discusses some problems concerning the relationship between the emphasis on group-based mutual learning at school and "private" competition in the so-called examination heIl.
