Abstract | "Despite the hostility of most recent governments, comprehensive schools and colleges command widespread public support and now educate over 90 per cent of pupils from age nine to nineteen in Britain. Yet there has been remarkably little research into their sucesses and difficulties. This definitive survey replaces speculation with hard fact. [ The authors] draw on the results of questionnaires completed in more than 1,500 institutions, with every local education authority throughout Britain represented by at least one school or college." The authors first describe the history of comprehensive education in Britain and the political debates which accompanied its establishment in 1965 and then "explore key issues like 'standards', selection and pupil grouping, as well as discipline, equal opportunities and links with local communities. Information is presented on different types of comprehensive institutions and colleges in respect of many factors, including social class intakes and 'academic results'. The authors consider how far today's curriculum and the continuing split between academic and vocational studies reflect the needs of an advanced society. They also provide a rich historical and international context to current dilemmas and debates." (DIPF/orig.). |
