Abstract	"The differentiation between academic and vocational education is a very essential aspect of European tradition." From this point of view the author discusses the German concept of 'Bildung' and the slogan ' Bildung durch Wissenschaft'. He characterises the strategy of mutual enrichment which is "one of the four strategies of establishing a new relationship between academic/general education in upper secondary education in Europe". He compares two different kinds of mainstream: vocationalization from above (Germany, France) and from below (England), and a combination of these two pairs in the Nordic countries Finland, Sweden and Norway: characteristically vocationalization from above together with the central planning of vocational education and labour market. He claims "that to be able to approach the 'learning society' all these three approaches require a change of the relationship between vocational and academic education due to a variety of trends in the working and social life".
