Abstract	1997 was a pivotal year for the YOUTH FOR EUROPE Programme. For this, its third year of implementation, the Commission decided to concentrate its attention on project quality, in terms of management, pedagogical value and projects' impact on European cooperation. - The present compendium presents the 500 or so projects financed under those actions which are directly managed by the Commission of the European Union. As such it reflects a part of the major trends that can be observed in the development of the programme, its impact on young people, and the themes which are of concern to young people across Europe. In this way YOUTH FOR EUROPE provides an excellent barometer of what young Europeans are thinking and living because, every year, more than 65.000 young people benefit from financial assistance from the Community in more than 2.500 projects in the various Member States of the European Union, Latin America, the Commonwealth of Independent States and Central and Eastern Europe.
