AbstractThe authors investigate "the state of language maintenance in second and third generation Italo-Australians, using core value theory to illustrate how and why there are differential rates in language shift from Italian to English. Their basic question is: How language-centred is the Italian community in terms of its core values? They hypothesise that if the language shifts in such communities the whole system of cultural core values will be seriously disrupted and this will lead to a diffusion of ethnic identity. The data that they analyse from questionnaires given to students of Italian-speaking background who were or were not studying Italian at university indicate that there are significant shifts in the amount of exposure to Italian in the school system. The results also indicate that there is a significant difference between students studying Italian at university and those who are not. In general they find lower rates of shift than those shown by Clyne in his analysis of the 1991 census data, and there is generally a greater use of Italian across most interaction types if Italian is studied at tertiary level. On the other hand, those not studying Italian appear to value their Italian background more, which provides clear evidence that at least in the Italian community language is not such a significant core value as was hypothesised or as is the case in the Greek, Polish and Latvian communities. In contradistinction to the Greek, Polish and Latvian groups, Italian speakers also consider it important to share their language with others". (DIPF/orig.).
