Abstract | The author provides an historical perspective of apprenticeship in England. He traces the multiplicity of meanings that apprenticeship has actually had in history, like: claiming to be a prestigious way of gaining master qualifications in some key production; being in form of social policy in the context of the exploitation of minors through child labour; and simultaneously offering a cheap way of organising popular education and an option for social ascendance through the pupil- teacher system. He goes on to analyse the character of the modern apprenticeship, which - although exploiting the traditional connotations of the term - actually developed in relation to the national vocational qualification system.
