| Abstract | A conception of a European philosophy textbook or reader should not centre on a homogeneous philosophical tradition encompassing the whole of Europe.... such a reader must be principally propaedeutic in the sense of offering material to the student which allows him/her to develop abilities and methods of philosophizing and to acquire the knowledge that is necessary for further independent work.... Much emphasis ought to be put on interdisciplinary work. If philosophy is supposed to be as important for teaching in Europe as its long tradition implies, it must also be able to demonstrate that it plays an important role in interdisciplinary discourse. It must show what it can contribute to the solution of those complex problems which are now raised in society and science and must be dealt with because of their importance for our future ... . Illustration can also be of special importance to a philosophy reader. If they are chosen properly they give above all food for thought and thus create an intellectual atmosphere in which the students are motivated to differentiate and to recognize correlations.... Illustration can also be calculated for provocation.(DIPF/orig.). |
