Abstract | The French philosopher and educationist Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) ... has had a great influence on the political philosophy and the theory of education of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) ... .... In the present paper the relations between Rousseau and Pestalozzi concerning their conception of man, their political theory and their theory of education are interpreted and analysed. Not only the reception of Rousseau by Pestalozzi, but also the latter's criticism directed against Rousseau are discussed. Special attention is given to Pestalozzi's philosophy of education as influenced by Rousseau and to the problems of the anthropological foundation of the educational theory in Rousseau and Pestalozzi. The relations between both thinkers are seen in the context of the intercultural relations between France and Switzerland, which have played an important role within the history of education in both countries, but especially in Switzerland.
