Abstract | The role of the environment in early language teaching is decisive. But first it should be defined what is meant by "environment". For the child between the ages of 0 and three years, the environment means his/her regular partners in elementary communication: the family. With the kindergarten and the nursery school, contacts are more diversified, but the environment plays the same dual role : on one hand that of forcing the child to use (and acquire) language to obtain and give satisfaction, and on the other hand giving him/her the wherewithall to respond adeqately to this permanent constraint. However, these constraints and means - combined together in the same environment - may also be of benefit for two or three languages : all that is needed in a permanent and stable contact with the other language.
