Abstract | In 1987/1988 the town of Waquehal and the French National Education Authority set up a scheme for English language teaching in nursery and primary schools. The teaching methods emphasized oral work, with a first approach of written work in CE1 (recognition exercises) followed by reading and writing from CE2 upwards. The "Wasquehal" method was created to ease the transition from language learning at primary level to that of secondary school. Since 1993, there has been active cooperation with teachers of the first year of the secondary school each year, with exchanges of teaching materials and evaluations as well as work in common on the linguistic work of each child at the time of his transfer to secondary school.
