Abstract | The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) began in 1991 the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and for the first time nine countries from Eastern and Central Europe participated in an IEA study. Then the IEANCEE project was created on initiative of UNESCO, Netherlands Foreign Ministry and IEA in order to provide extra training to give the researchers from the CEE countries a background in the fundamentals of survey research technology. The book presents the regional reports from this countries which are to be seen as 'hands-on' training. The book is structured in the following sections: The organization and conduct of the study; Student background characteristics, Home conditions, and attitudes; Mathematic instruction; The schools; student achievment; A first approach to identifying factors affecting achievement.
