Abstract	There has been growing dissatisfaction with the Austrian educational system since the late 1980s, mainly because of the decrease in the number of students in lower- and intermediate-level technical and vocational training, the negative effects of a higher level of qualifications (overcrowded universities, a tendency towards overeducation and a lack of blue-collar workers complained about by the business community), and finally the great supply of specialists unable or unwilling to cross disciplinary boundaries. Furthermore, the highly centralised and bureaucratic structure of the Austrian educational system has made innovative and flexible decision-making difficult, resulting in the risk of a high degree of uniformity. During the last few years the system has undergone reforms and there are more to come. (DIPF/Orig.).
