Abstract | The key for understanding Freinet is to be found in the concept of laicity. Starting from this fundamental idea, the theory which serves as a basis for Freinet's practice can be developed and reflected upon by way of a systematised analysis of his works. The question whether Freinet's conception of himself as a teacher is to be primarily evaluated in educational or in political terms - even today still unsolved - will remain superficial and disregarded since Freinet is generally considered a laicist. The present paper emphasises the fact that Freinet, starting out from his laical conception of himself and by his independent reception of contemporary international approaches in the field of educational reforms, developed an unmistakable and unique educational concept of reforms that is taking concrete shape in the "Ecole Freinet", which opened in 1935 in Vence/France, up to this day.
