Abstract | The paper contains initial results of the studies on the effects of the experimental school syllabus in the field of civics education: They are carried out in 52 primary schools (classes VII and VIII) and are supported by local authorities. The syllabus emphasizes learning practical skills and prefers active learning methods (discussions, staging plays, roleplays etc.) The research carried out among the sample of 512 seventh- class pupils from 20 schools after a half-year learning period indicates a very favourable reception of the lessons. Their different character in comparison with other lessons is stressed (freedom, openness of expression, interesting learning material). The increased pupils' activity and classes' integration can be observed. The lessons are positively evaluated in many aspects (attractiveness, usefulness, clearness, sensibleness). The subjective increase of information about the closer and farther environment is highly evaluated. There are significant individual differences in the reception of a lesson due to the level of identity and assertiveness as well as environmental ones (lessons are better received by pupils from villages and small towns).
