Abstract | (The author) points out that Swedish educational policy declares a strong commitment to children's personal and social development. It is expected that schools help children to mature and to take an active role in a democratic society as well as to acquire academic and practical knowledge and skills. Yet a survey of young people's attitudes towards school suggests that for a sizeable minority school presents an alienating experience in which attendance at school is seen as serving no useful purpose. (The author) argues that there are urgent social reasons for schools to change to become more relevant to the needs of young people and to consider how they can be more effective in their role in personal and social development.
