Abstract | This paper examines change and continuity in the self-reported allocation of academic work activities over a twenty year period based on the results of a national survey of Australian academics conducted in 1993/94. While the time given to the core activities of teaching and research has remained fairly stable since the 1970s, changes at the margin of academic workload are of considerable importance well beyond the actual time involved. Additional tasks have been largely generated by the demands of institutional competition, accountability, and quality assurance processes. These work trends are considered in the context of highly stable academic work values and point to a number of emerging issues that concern staffing policy and practice.
