Abstract | Teacher isolation and teacher collaboration are regarded as important workplace conditions in schools. The concept of educational leadership stresses the central position of the principal in the school. Nevertheless, principal isolation in schools has hardly deserved any attention in educational research. The aim of this article is to develop concepts and methods for the investigation of principal isolation. Principal isolation is assumed to be a task specific concept. Isolation is determined by means of the principal's position in a communication network of the school. The research question is whether this level of participation in the network is related to principal's task perception. Results indicate that isolated principals and non-isolated principals differ in their perception of educational leadership tasks in the expected direction. Education leadership tasks are distinguished from general management tasks and instructional tasks. (DIPF/Abstract übernommen) |
