Abstract | The research was carried out as part of the programme of the Social Policy Reform Team, under the project "Social costs of political transformations in the countries of Central Europe" which was initiated and organized by the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna. The research was conducted from March to June 1993 on the sample of 1087 graduates who completed different types of post-primary vocational schools in 1992 in the following towns: Dzialdowo, Kutno and Makow Mazowiecki. These towns are characterized by a very high rate of unemployment. The obtained results prove that finding a job is the most difficult problem that young people face. 70% of vocational school graduates cannot get employment, out of which 9% are the "long-term" unemployed, without the right to receive the unemployment benefit. At the same time, however, young people still display assertive attitudes towards the state and they want, upon completing the school, to be given a guarantee of regular employment. As much as 50% of graduates declare their interest in retraining; in practice, however, they are discouraged by a number of serious problems. The obtention of new qualifications is closely connected with regular employment, and a lack of perspectives in this respect discourages from retraining. Occupational start of youth is very difficult and requires that immediate and complex actions should be undertaken. (DIPF/Abstract übernommen). |
