| Abstract | The author presents an evaluation of higher education, its major problems and threats to its development, as well as formulates measures that ought to be undertaken. He pays particular attention to the following: quantitative changes in the education structure (main tendencies, pace, the structure and dynamism of changes in enrolment at the highest years of different faculties); the research potential of higher schools (financing, staffing, the execution of research contract); changes in higher education curricula and organization; problems of the employment and payment of academic teachers (employment structure, payment structure); expenditures from the state budget on higher education and related aspects; relationships between the labour market and higher education (labour market demands and educational specializations, graduates, competences, unemployment).
