Abstract | The cultural dimensions of foreign language teaching and in-service teacher training are treated in this article. It describes a cross-cultural teacher training seminar designed to bring to the force the process by which language teachers experience and deal with difference as they discuss their choice and uns of 'authentic' texts to teach the foreign language.... The goal of this seminar was to make teachers experience the back-and-forth of cultural 'border crossing' as they made sense of one another's materials, and to identify the faultlines along which misunderstandings could and did occur. I have described how the group came to realise that surface misunderstandings in fact covered some deeply rooted divergent views of the world, born out of divergent educational systems and societal values.
