Abstract | Luxemburg is located between two large linguistic and cultural blocks, German and French. Accordingly, Luxemburg has integrated these two languages into its school curriculum. Language teaching begins in Luxembourgish, a Moselle dialect closely resembling German. Because the people in Luxemburg speak Luxembourghish at home and among friends, they have little difficulty studying the German language. Starting in the first school year, teaching is conducted in German. The German language is taught throughout a child's school career. French language study begins during the second school year, and it remains in the school curriculum during all subsequent years. This bilingual educational approach was oriented towards a homogeneous Luxemburg school population. (DIPF/orig.). |
