| Abstract | Canadian public schools are facing two kinds of difficulties: A general shortage of resources accompanied by "the reduction in the proportion of persons with direct ties to schools.... The other major vexation is called ' bureaucracy', a summary label used to describe the rigidities associated with the large district organizations in which schools are embedded.... This chapter discusses an initiative that addresses the two problems of shortage and rigidity. Called 'voluntarism' or 'benevolence', it is an avenue whereby most schools are able to acquire acutely needed resources for local needs and to build important connections among their parents and surrounding neighborhoods.... Voluntarism means individual giving to public schools." Most evident are the gifts of time from individual people. The study reported here analyses the effects of gifting and of voluntary work for schools in British Columbia. (DIPF/Bi.). |
