Abstract | This book is the first to charcterize effective scholls for poor children, internationally. Eight case studies are provided initiatives to improve schools for rural and disadvantaged children: the New School Program in Colombia; the Democratic School Model in Brazil; a plantation school in Sri Lanka; the local school improvement efforts in Thailand; the education program for rural development in Nepal; the school reform in Ghana; strategies for providing quality education in Burundi; and the Accelerated Schools in the USA. The studies found that the effective schools share several common features with respect to provision of necessary inputs, existence of facilitating conditions, and the will to change. The book is unique in its focus on developing countries and good schools for impoverished children, and drawing on the research of an international group of scholars from all regions of the world.
