Abstract | The author "employs a comparative perspective to analyze the relationship between school experience and identity formation processes for working-class female Algerian and French students. Her account describes how school is viewed and responded to by young woman. She shows how their processes of identity formation differ as a function of the specific conjuncture of schooling, family, sexual desire, and an opportunity structure shaped by ethnic and racial forces. Rassiguier's ethnographic case accounts illustrate the multifaceted and fluid qualities of these young women's identities. Her analysis reveals the complex ways in which these identities are mediated by the social, cultural, and discursive contexts to which the young women have access." (DIPF/uebernommen). |
