Abstract	This study focuses on problems and prospects for higher education in the CSFR in the light of current political, economic and social changes. It also includes a brief review of the historical development of higher education, and an attempt has been made to describe the influence of the last forty years on education. Differences between the developments in both the Czech and Slovakia are also noted. The second part of this review, drawing on this analysis, consists of an examination and report prepared by the OECD. It will evaluate the present situation (1991) in Czechoslovak higher education in line with recognised international standards and will propose deirections for iths development.
