| Abstract | Skill formation - the training of workers, both on and off the job - is an important managerial function in an industrial economy. This volume examines the skill formation process both from the theoretical viewpoint and through case studies at the factory level in three countries. On the basis of surveys and observations in Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan, the contributors compare standards and practices in four industries: cement production, car battery manufacture, machine tool production, and banking. Differences are noted from one country to another, and especially between Japan and the two Southeast Asian nations, but there are also many striking similarities in the way workers learn new skills and take responsabilitiy for production and supervision, particularly in the importance placed on on-the-job training in all three countries. The contributors ask whether Japan's skill formation systems are transferable to newly industrializing economies, and conclude that they are, to the extent that managers take a long-range view of employee development and emphasize on-the-job learning of job skills. An appendix outlines the school education and vocational training systems in Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. (DIPF/orig.). |
