Abstract	The author believes that schools have a responsibility to help children "become active practitioners in some discipline area". Although he acknowledges the importance of a common curriculum for all children, he wants education to help young people achieve competence in a particular knowledge domain. Computer-based tools can help schools achieve this pedagogical goal in two ways ... . First, computers can introduce children to formal thinking procedures in the context of playful activities such as writing simple programs for controlling robots or writing poems. Second, computers can bring children into closer contact with the work of real practitioners. By 2020, the author envisions the availability of computer-based tools that are similar but simpler versions of those used by scholars, scientists, and artists. These "apprentice tools" will help bridge the gap between schooling and work, initiating "the student in the actual processes used by experts to perform real tasks". (DIPF/orig.).
