Abstract	Forschungsmethode: beschreibend. "The General Report (Part I) provides a description of Finland's science and technology policy-making machinery and mechanisms. It assesses the level of the national R & D effort and draws the main features of national programmes aiming at the promotion of research, development and innovation. It also brings to light the efforts launched by the Government to strengthen regional scientific and technological efforts. It underlines the importance of education, as well as other sectoral policies, in shaping the future evolution of science and technology in Finland. The Examiners recognised (Part II) that Finland has established an impressive collection of science and technology policies and now possesses a sizeable scientific and technological potential, both in terms of institutions and resources. It remains for the Government and society to clarify the major goals to be assigned to this effort. The challenge is, therefore, to apply these policies to the diversa needs of society and the economy. The vigour of the national research and development effort is impressive. The importance of science and technology in Finland's economic and social development should be acknowledged in other sectors, so that adjustments can be made to remove obstacles and stimulate growth."
