Abstract	A guide for curriculum development in New York City's French second language programs to be piloted in junior and senior high schools contains six cultural theme units for level 1 and the grammatical structures in French for levels 1 - 3. The cultural theme units are designed to be used as a core for the acquisition of language patterns, vocabulary, usage, and structures. The theme unit approach is based on the premise that real situations are a strong stimulus for learning to communicate in a foreign language. The situations are of the type encountered while traveling or living in a foreign country. Within each unit is cultural content characteristic of the situation. The units are designed to be developed through a variety of activities with supportive materials taken from textbooks or created by the teacher, allowing adaptation to special needs, enrichment, and use of student creativity. Each unit contains information on its rationale, basic objectives, suggested methods and materials, time sequence, relevant cultural information, vocabulary and useful expressions, developmental questions, grammatical structures, suggested classroom procedures, enrichment activities, readings, and testing ideas. Unit topics include getting acquainted, eating, getting to know the geographic area, shopping, recreation, and earning a living. Lists of grammatical structures are appended.
