Abstract | After reviewing prior literature about historical learning and historical culture and based on the "activity theory", we developed the frameworks of "historical-cultural activity" and "social historical learning". We used both to analyze the construction of history curricula in the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania- a former part of Eastern Germany before 1989-between 1991 and 2006. Applying qualitative content analysis, we found, for example, that "West Germans" led the group of curriculum authors after 1993 and that they constructed curricula using West German curricula as guidelines. We concluded that no significant historical learning process took place within the group of curriculum authors after 1991. |
