Abstract | In order to discuss the role of textbooks in supporting and consistently implementing key concepts of a whole school curriculum in the classroom, the paper addresses three basic issues. First of all, an analysis of recently introduced Austrian curricula for the upper secondary level and current criteria for textbook approbation outlines cross-cutting elements which might foster a convergent approach to teaching and learning different foreign languages. A subsequent chapter tackles the problem of aligning a pluralistic textbook approach for teaching Italian, French, and Spanish as third foreign languages to curricular regulations. In conclusion, a longitudinal field study with the aim of investigating the potential of textbooks to promote both proficiency in the target language and plurilingual competence is presented.
