Abstract	Communication science has been playing an important role in research on young people and the media. However, it has not fully exploited the potential that lies in the study of the meaning and consequences that emergent communication technologies have for young people. Against this background, this chapter makes the case that social robots present a crucial emergent communication technology that deserves the attention of communication science: Driven by major advancements in computing, robotic engineering, and artificial intelligence, social robots are about to enter young people's communication environment. Researching social robots requires, however, that we give up our preoccupation with (mediated) human-human communication. Rather, we need to embrace the notion of the medium as the communicator, in which social robots can be seen as both the object and subject of study. In this context, important future topics for research on social robots and young people include questions about privacy, identity, and moral development. (DIPF/Orig.).
