Abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a novel activity (disc golf) on student motivation and amotivation in high school physical education (PE). High school students (N=191; females=87, males=104) from grades 9-12 were the participants in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=4 sections of disc golf) or a control group (n=4 sections of softball) for a 6-week unit. The Sports Motivation Scale II-PE (SMS II-PE) and Amotivation Inventory-PE (AI-PE) were used to collect pretest and posttest measures for both groups. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and 2 (Group) x 2 (Time) repeated measures ANOVA. Results showed there was a statistically significant interaction between Group (Control and Experimental) and Time (Pretest and Posttest). Students who participated in the novel activity (disc golf) had decreased amotivation levels and increased motivation levels in comparison with the control group (softball). (Autor). |
