Abstract | The article discusses the relation of Bildung, politics, language and community in a bildungs-theoretical and foundational theoretical perspective. Nancy's post-democratic and social-theoretical thinking is combined with language-theoretical insights of Humboldt and made fruitful for contexts of (foreign) language teaching. Bildung and education, both aiming at democracy, cannot be reduced to contexts of political education. Following Nancy, the article argues that democracy as a way of being with each other (Mit-ein-ander) ontologically precedes all communication and all institutions. Following Humboldt's theory of Bildung and the concepts of alienation and of not-understanding, language education can be defined as communication (Mit-teilung) between one's own and the foreign. In this sense, a challenge for foreign language teaching would be to offer openess for "expeausitions" (Nancy) and experiences of foreignness, which can express themselves in a system of verbal symbols as well as in expressions of the lived body. Negative experiences - disappointment, irritation, failure - can thus unfold productive meaning for processes of teaching and learning. (Verlag, adapt.). |
