Abstract | This article presents a long-term study on transnational tendencies in motivation for learning German as a foreign language. For this purpose, mainly qualitative data based on written language learning biographies were collected from 1,180 GFL students from 20 different countries. The data analysis, which followed the grounded theory approach, suggest that especially positive attitudes towards foreign language learning, instrumental orientations, and the image of German as an additional and challenging language contribute crucially to choosing German as a subject and to continuing learning the langauge. These data were compared with and contrasted to those from pilot studies interrogating learners about their reasons for deciding against learning German. The overall results are matched with information on GFL learner numbers in the countries of the data collection as well as with the current international state of research. (Verlag, adapt.). |
