Abstract | Background: This research project of the University of Education Weingarten and Cologne University examined the use of teaching and learning media in German secondary school literature classes. Its major purpose was to analyze how several issues of the conflicts between literature classes, teaching profession and task formats are reflected in media usage. Method: 130 secondary school teachers of all types of schools participated in answering a specifically designed questionnaire. In addition, another 60 teachers were surveyed by guided Interviews. Both groups were asked about the aims of literature classes, its challenges and their impacts on designing and conducting lessons, which teaching and learning media they favored and how they use it. Results: Motivating students to read is a duty for German language and literature classes of any type of school. However, teachers from different school types do not respond equally to a lack of reading motivation. Secondary school teachers at German Gymnasiums tend to focus on their own preferred literature, which involves a specific range of texts, thus they argue on a subject-oriented level. In contrast, teachers of general-education secondary schools (Hauptschulen) argue on an object-oriented level, focusing on the students' interests in order to increase their motivation.
