Abstract | This study examined the benefits of the combined used of a hearing aid and tactual aid to supplement lip-reading in the reception of speech and for the recognition of environmental sounds in an adult with profound hearing loss. Speech conditions included lip-reading alone (L), lip-reading + tactual aid (L+TA) lip-reading + hearing aid (L+HA) and lip-reading + tactual aid + hearing aid (L+TA+HA). For identification of speech segments, reception of words in sentences and reception of continuous discourse, performance was generally ordered as L less than L+TA less than L+HA less than or equal to L+TA+HA. For environmental sound reception, closed-set identification on the combined condition of TA+HA was significantly better than through either of the devices alone. The subject finds the combination of both aids most useful for one-on-one speech reception in favorable background conditions. (As Provided). |
