Abstract | This paper explains a research study that examined the contents of social studies textbooks in grades one to four in order to determine the concepts that the books presented. The purposes of the study were to determine: (1) if concepts from all of the social studies areas are represented in primary textbooks; (2) if fundamental social studies concepts are provided; and (3) what are the most frequently appearing social science and history concepts. The paper described the study's sample, procedures, findings and implications. Differences did occur among concepts presented by various publishers and among representations of various social studies areas within individual grades. Examples are provided for examining frequently occurring concepts and for linking them together to form rules or relationships. The study concludes that important and meaningful social studies concepts are not presented in grade one to four textbooks and that these books do not encourage students to form rules or to solve problems. Seven tables and 15 references are included. (JHP) |
