AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine if children's performance in solving verbally stated arithmetic problems varied when word clues were included or omitted. The sample consisted of 382 fifth-grade children enrolled in four schools of one school system. Twelve sets of problems were so constructed that each set contained two similar problem situations, one of which contained a word clue while the other did not. Comparisons of mean differences were made for the total group population and for the scores within each of the nine subgroups which were studied. The results indicated that (1) the total population was significantly better at obtaining correct problem solutions when problems contained word clues than when they did not, (2) the total population was significantly better at selecting the correct arithmetic processes when the word clues were provided than when they were not, (3) all ability and performance levels of children, by subgroups, were significantly better at obtaining correct problem solutions when word clues were provided, with three exceptions, and (4) all ability and performance levels of children, by subgroups, were significantly better at selecting the correct arithmetic processes when the word clues were provided.
