Abstract | This packet provides generic versions of curriculum developed for the Michelin Tire Corporation workplace literacy program, specifically the mathematics portion. Altered material included in the packet protects proprietary information; some lessons include lines that take the place of deleted information. Other companies are recommended to use their own nomenclature to fill in these areas. The 11 lessons adapt easily for use by the individual student or in a classroom group setting. Each lesson consists of some or all of the following components: lesson summary sheet with job title, lesson title, overall time, and the following information in a table format--specific instructional objective and learning activities with corresponding time, resources/materials, and evaluation process; teacher's outline of content and activities; videotape script(s); handout(s); transparency masters; worksheet(s); worksheet answer key(s); and post-assessment. Lesson topics are as follows: measuring using the metric ruler; lapsed time (downtime calculations); reading gauges; measuring with a Vernier caliper; reading comprehension (keeping up with change in the workplace); statistical process control (SPC)--measuring accurately; SPC--recording measurements on SPC charts; SPC--calculating average; SPC--calculating range; SPC--recording average and range; and SPC--plotting average and range.
