Abstract | This report presents findings of a 1993 survey of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada members covering international educational activities at Canadian universities. The study was designed to identify and describe the administrative rationales and priorities attributed to internationalization, organizational factors related to integrating international studies into the mainstream university activities, and to examine trends in internationalization efforts and initiatives. The study was based on a questionnaire which collected comparable data from 58 of the 89 member institutions on the following: (1) the reasons and rationales for internationalizing higher education institutions, (2) internationalization as an institutional goal, (3) integration of internationalization into the administrative structure of the institution, (4) organizational factors, (5) leadership needs, (6) the meaning of internationalization, (7) elements of internationalization, (8) various types of internationalization efforts and activities, (9) comparison of findings from the current study with those of an earlier 1991 study, and (10) further issues. Appendixes include a copy of the Standing Advisory Committee on International Relations' Statement on Internationalization; the 1993 survey questionnaire; and a list of respondents' universities. A French language version of the report is included. (Contains 25 references.) (CH) |
