Abstract | The goal of the Ad Hoc Technical Committee for Vocational Agriculture in Indiana was to develop a model and recommendations that would result in improved student knowledge and skills for the present and future, address labor market needs, and promote program excellence at all levels of education. The committee developed recommendations for secondary, postsecondary, and adult agricultural education. Their accomplishments included (1) a mission statement that emphasizes the importance of both academic and vocational components of the program; (2) a list of common skills for education for the vocation of agriculture; (3) recommendations for curriculum and content at all levels of agricultural education in the areas of student organizations, summer programs, and improving the image of the programs; (4) recommendations for changes in teacher education and professional development--including ones concerning the exploration of changes at Purdue University; and (5) a discussion of the need for better and more easily available data on occupational trends and employment levels in the area of agriculture. (In this report, an overview of the present situation and a discussion of trends in the area are provided with each recommendation. The report also includes information on the current situation in Indiana agriculture, a brief summary of the history of agricultural education in the state, data on current student information and enrollments, and a 27-item reference list. Appendixes include definitions of terms used in the report, an outline for summer educational programs, and the list of common skills for the vocation of agriculture.) (KC) |
