Abstract | Although the past 20 years have seen an increased focus on fatherhood, few studies have examined the relationship between a father's geographic location and his psychological well-being. To address this gap, this study examined low-income, noncustodial, predominantly African American fathers' depression in relation to locality, social support, and life stresses. Participants were 96 urban and 31 rural noncustodial fathers. Findings indicate depression is positively related to life stress and inversely related to social support. Locality, social support, and life stress accounted for a significant proportion of the variation in fathers' depression. Policy implications and direction for future research is discussed.
