AbstractAIDS, from the beginning, has been a mnemonic pandemic. Remembering and forgetting have reflected and constituted the vicissitudes of HIV/AIDS, its inventions, significations, and transformations in and across time, then and now and into the welter, promise and pitfall, of future and futurity. The 25th anniversary of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), occasion and opportunity, is also mnemonic. Scholars and activists commemorate the "diverse, nonpartisan group of individuals united in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis." Anyone affected by HIV/AIDS should remember those who, in March 1987, organized in New York and thereafter across the US and around the world, radicalizing response to the pandemic so as to stanch and ultimately end the death toll and discriminations by which it mounted. In this article, the author shares his thoughts on ACT UP's legacy which might be understood as "non-commemorative". He also talks about archival queers that serve as proponents and practitioners of mnemonic world making. (Contains 15 notes.) (ERIC).
